Is it Time to Replace the Vinyl Siding on Your Home?

Your siding is a very crucial component of your home. Not only is it designed to be aesthetically pleasing, but it is also engineered to protect and insulate your home from the elements. Wind and rain from storms, as well as the heat of the summer and the chill of the winter, can impact the condition of your vinyl siding. Even the most well-maintained siding will eventually need to be replaced or repaired. It is important to inspect your siding often, especially at the end of a particularly harsh storm or season. Here are some things you should be looking out for that are clear indications that it may be time for new siding on your home.

Cracks, Gaps, and Holes in Your Siding

On top of being an eyesore, cracks and gaps can be especially harmful for your siding. They let in water and moisture, allowing mold and fungus to penetrate underneath the protective layer of siding. They can also compromise the structural integrity of the siding. It is not uncommon for a severe storm to damage one or two pieces of siding on your home. It is vital to replace the damaged pieces as soon as possible, as they will often lead to bigger concerns if left in place. If larger sections of the siding are cracked or damaged, it may indicate a larger problem and may be time to re-side the home.

It is also important to check for holes in your siding, as this usually indicates the presence of insects. These holes will let in water and moisture as well, and should be addressed immediately by calling an exterminator.

Is Your Siding Loose or Warped?

When inspecting your siding for damage, it is important to check it closely and from multiple angles. In particular, note any pieces or areas of siding that are no longer flat. Warped pieces or bulging areas of siding is a warning that there may be serious damage beneath your siding. If this is the case, do not hesitate in calling a professional to come and inspect the damage.

Soaring Energy Bills

Notice your energy bills going up month over month? Rising energy costs are problems usually associated with your roof or your attic, but if you have eliminated those two areas the next place to check is your siding. Shoddy installation or low-grade insulation could be culprit, and may need to be replaced. Your siding is meant to protect your home from the elements and keep your family safe and comfortable; if it is not doing its job, your wallet will notice!

Faded Siding

The color on your vinyl siding will only hold for so long, and even quality siding may start to fade after 8-10 years. If your siding is becoming faded, it is a sign that the waterproofing protection on the siding has reached the end of its lifespan.

Problems Can Penetrate to Your Home’s Interior

Issues caused  by damaged siding are not limited to your home’s exterior! Siding is meant to be a barrier for water and moisture; if they have penetrated underneath your siding then the interior walls of your home may be showing warning signs. If you notice peeling paint or loose wallpaper, then moisture may be building up in the wall underneath. Also, water and moisture can lead to mold and mildew inside your home. If you see any of these warning signs, the integrity of your siding may be compromised.

Again, it is vitally important to inspect your siding often. If you notice any of these signs, don’t be afraid to call in the experts at A-Top Roofing and Construction. We will not hesitate in performing a thorough inspection of your siding and determining if it needs replacing. We carry the #1 vinyl siding brand for 21 consecutive years, CertainTeed™! Gutter Cleaning and Replacement – Spring Rain is Here!

Spring-time is officially here and warm weather is on the way, and with it comes rain, rain, and more rain. This time of year is a very tough time on your gutters and is the perfect time to inspect your gutter systems for any signs of damage or neglect, especially if they have been poorly or improperly maintained. Many problems can arise from poorly maintained or damaged gutters, and if left unattended can potentially cause damage to your home and landscaping in the future. Our experts at A-Top Roofing and Construction recommend a thorough gutter cleaning to prevent a lot of these problems.

Poorly maintained or neglected gutters can easily become clogged. These clogs can lead to water overflows, which can lead to a lot of major headaches for homeowners. Leaks in the foundation or basement of your home can cause significant damage to your personal belongings. Unwanted water can find its way to the fascia of your home, causing rotting wood and structural damage. Improper drainage and water overflow can also create poor conditions for landscaping, as the top soil erodes and destroys plants and their seeds. These soil conditions and abundant moisture can also lead to a host of pest related problems.

We understand the need to keep your gutters clear of leaves and debris. A-Top Roofing and Construction offers gutter cleaning services for our customers in Monmouth County, Northern Ocean County and parts of Middlesex County, NJ.

If time and weather have been especially harsh on your gutters, a thorough gutter cleaning may not be enough; it may be time for a replacement gutter system. When replacing your gutters and downspouts, always make sure you use an accredited company, fully insured and utilizing trained installers. All A-Top gutter systems have a warranty and we only use the best materials for the gutters and for the facia should it need to be replaced.

A-Top Roofing and Construction is one of the best gutter replacement companies in New Jersey and offers exceptional quality products from Englert. We provide expert fabrication and installation services for residential homes throughout Central New Jersey. We utilize hidden hangers to keep your gutter up, which means no more nails! Hidden hangars also translate into less maintenance, increasing the value of your gutters. Englert 5” and 6” gutters also come in a variety of colors which will coordinate and beautify your home.

Keep A-Top Roofing and Construction in mind for all of your gutter cleaning and replacement needs. We have over 30 years experience and service all parts of Central New Jersey. Attic Condensation: What It Is and How to Prevent It

Imagine a cold glass of water sitting outside on a hot summer day. Condensation forms on the outside of the glass, where the cold glass is coming into contact with the warm, humid air. The same thing may be happening on the inside of your attic; the warm, moist air trapped inside of your home is coming into contact with the cold wooden surfaces in your attic, forming large damaging water droplets. These water droplets can lead to lots of problems for you as a home owner, namely rot, mold, and leaks. It is important to note that this is not a roof-related issue; heat and humidity originating from the interior environment of the home and traveling up into the attic on the underside of the roof is the cause of attic condensation.

Attic condensation forms on the wooden beams and walls of your attic.
Condensation usually forms on the wooden beams and walls in your attic. The first signs of damage will appear in these areas

There are plenty of things you can do to minimize attic condensation from occurring. Good insulation is a must because it minimizes the amount of warm air entering the attic to begin with. This is especially important in your attic bypasses – areas connecting to your home, like heating ducts, kitchen exhaust fans, lighting fixtures, bathroom vents, etc. – make sure they are properly insulated. Also, installing a whole-home dehumidifier may counteract the buildup of moisture.

What makes attic condensation so insidious is that it is much harder to spot and address. It is possible to go unnoticed until your roof starts sagging from the rotting of the beams in your attic, or until you start having respiratory issues from the buildup of mold. These issues require major repair, and the hiring of specialized mold remediation crews; all of which can be prevented by properly insulating your attic, which is much cheaper in the long run.

Check areas around pipes running through your attic space. They are prone to building up condensation.
Check areas around pipes running through your attic space. They are prone to building up condensation.

Also, attic condensation isn’t a problem limited to only older homes; newer homes can be affected as well. Most building codes don’t address humidity issues, and are also pretty lax on the level of insulation required in your attic, especially around those previously mentioned attic bypasses.

A-Top Roofing and Construction has decades of experience and professionally trained crews to help minimize the buildup of attic condensation. There are many procedures to address condensation forming in your attic, but they all have the same goal: keeping heat in the interior living space of your home. Our crew will start by adding additional insulation into your attic to prevent heat from migrating from below; areas such as lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, and attic stair pull-downs will be surrounded with insulation to prevent hot air from entering your attic. Additionally, our crews can install ventilation intakes on your soffit eves, additional attic fans controlled by a humistat, and a humidifier on your furnace so you can monitor the outside weather conditions and adjust accordingly.

All of these services will help decrease the amount of humidity in your attic, thus decreasing the buildup of attic condensation. By performing these suggested procedures you can minimize the effects of this winter time condition.

Keep A-Top Roofing and Construction in mind for all of your roofing repair and replacement needs. We have over 30 years experience and service all parts of Central New Jersey. Most Common Roof Problems and How to Fix Them

Whether it is age or storm-related damage, eventually your roof will be in need of repair. At A-Top Roofing and Construction, we have over 30 years of experience in roofing repair and replacement solutions for your home. Here are the most common causes for roof failure and how to repair them:

Every roof has a natural ‘life’, usually around 25-30 years. Sometimes it is possible for your roof to reach the end of it’s life without experiencing any kind of significant damage or failure. If your roof just looks old and worn, maybe it is time for you to take some preventive measures on your home. However, if replacing an old roof is delayed it could result in a big headache in the future. Below are some warning signs to look out for and be sure to give yourself plenty of time to add these projects to your “to do” list. If you need help with your re-roofing project do not hesitate to give us a call at (732) 446-6341, or visit a-topconstruction.com for more information on what services we provide.

Potential warning signs that your roof may need replacing:

  • Curled shingle edges or cupped shingle tabs.
  • Bald spots on the shingles where granules are missing.
Granules can wear away from the shingles over time.
  • Shingles are cracked.
  • Your roof is at least 20 years old; age is the #1 cause of roof failure. While many modern shingles are manufactured with durability in mind, many factors can cause them to age quickly. Poor ventilation, for example, can have a negative impact on the age of your shingles.
  • Your roof just looks old and worn.
Shingles can fall off or blow away in a storm or heavy winds.
  • Your neighbors are replacing their roofs. Homes built around the same time usually experience the same kind of weather conditions. If your neighbors are getting new roofs, it may be a good indication you need a new roof as well.
  • Check your roof for moss, especially in moist, cool climates and in areas of the roof that don’t get much exposure to the sun. Moss growth can be very problematic, as moss holds moisture against the surface of the roof can cause damage to the granules on top of the shingles in freezing climates. Moss can be removed by brushing it off, but it won’t prevent it from growing back in the future. Also, you should take care not to damage the shingles while removing the moss. It may not be a bad idea to contract a professional roofing contractor, like A-Top Roofing and Construction, if you have problems with moss.
Moss or lichen can accumulate on damp or shady areas of your roof.

Keep A-Top Roofing and Construction in mind for all of your roofing repair and replacement needs. We have over 30 years experience and service all parts of Central New Jersey. Our services include: residential and commercial roofing, gutters, skylights, flat and metal roofs, vinyl siding, soffits, facia, replacement doors and windows, decks, porches, columns and mold remediation.

A-Top Roofing and Construction Recognized with Prestigious GAF Presidential Club Award

A-Top Roofing and Construction of Manalapan, New Jersey, has received the most prestigious contractor award GAF offers: The GAF President’s Club Award. This highly coveted award recognizes A-Top Roofing and Construction as one of the “elite of the elite” residential roofing contractors in the United States.

GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and only GAF Master Elite(R) Contractors can compete for its residential President’s Club Award. To qualify for this award, a residential roofing contractor must meet specific criteria in at least one out of three different pathways:

• Performance Pathway – where contractors focus on giving their property owners the best possible service, quality, and protection.
• Reliability Pathway – where the contractor has a long history of offering their customers the best quality and protection.
• Service Pathway – where contractors consistently offer their customers the best protection available in the marketplace.

A-Top Roofing and Construction has been a GAF Master Elite(R) Contractor since 2004. To become a Master Elite(R) Contractor, a status that less than 2% of roofing contractors nationwide are able to achieve, a candidate must demonstrate proper licensing (in states that require it), maintain insurance, have a proven reputation, and show commitment to ongoing professional training.

“We value our certified contractors for raising the industry standard year after year by installing the best roofing products and systems. Our President’s Club award recognizes only those contractors who have distinguished themselves by the highest standards of excellence, customer satisfaction, and dependability,” says Jim Slauson, GAF’s VP of Certified Program & Services.

Day in and day out, A-Top Roofing and Construction is one of the most reliable companies in the region, according to owner Andrew Ferrara. “Being in business for more than three decades, with the reliable and outstanding reputation that we’ve built, sets us apart. We’re more than just roofing–we do all types of home improvement: siding, windows, doors, interior alterations, attic insulation, and mold and mildew remediation.”

“We bring some of the most talented, educated people in the industry,” states Ferrara. “We’re constantly updating and educating employees, keeping up to speed on different types of programs. We don’t have a lot of salesmen, so we bring a lot of personal insight–we instill this in our people, and it reflects back on the job site. So our attitude trickles all the way down to the homeowner.”

Personal service is the number one consideration for this family-run business. “We bring a tremendous amount of knowledge to the table, and we’re great listeners,” explains Ferrara. “We offer a lot of input regarding the right way and the wrong way to go about a project. The Internet has taught everyone that there’s always a cheaper price somewhere, and we’re in a world where people have become conditioned to use technology in this way to make their decisions. Home improvement doesn’t work that way. We educate people to keep the personal touch–not to use technology to the point where we become disconnected or detached from filling the customer’s needs.”

Great service is reflected in A-Top Roofing and Construction’s continued recognition by the Better Business Bureau, which has awarded the company an A rating. “Our company has had zero complaints–ever,” states Ferrara. “So we’re pleased with our involvement with the BBB. We’ve been part of Angie’s List for a number of years, as well. Of course, the GAF President’s Club Award is huge, and we set out in 2013 with the goal to achieve that in 2014 and keep repeating it each year–and we’ve done that!”

A-Top Roofing and Construction’s level of commitment extends to the community. The company is involved with Habitat for Humanity and contributes to local Little Leagues and fundraising for local high school sports teams. “We’re always big sponsors in trying to help out,” says Ferrara.

Going forward, A-Top Roofing and Construction will continue focusing on satisfying customers and moving ahead with green initiatives. The company is trying to become more paperless and to offer building and insulation products that meet green standards.

“At A-Top, we focus on quality instead of quantity,” concludes Ferrara. “If you’re looking for quality with a very fair price, it’s definitely us. When employees go to a customer’s home and do things the right way–well, that’s the big advantage of using a company like ours.”
